Writing at Our Lady's

How writing is taught

We understand the importance of encouraging and nurturing a child’s love of English and writing, so that they enjoy their learning and continue to improve their skills beyond their time at Our Lady’s. This means that we make English actively engaging for the children, with a real purpose and using stimuli and books in which we know the children hold genuine interest.

Children are given time to reflect upon their work, discuss it and then refine it to ensure it is the best it can be, we do this with our ‘purple polishing pens’. We celebrate good writing by adding it to displays, classroom working walls, or on the child’s individual section of the Wow Wall.

Each half term focuses on one high quality text that links with our class topic. From this text we teach a number of different genres ensuring children are immersed in key vocabulary. This also helps children see examples of good writing and different structures. We start of each new text with a book hook activity, this helps engage the children and gets them excited to find out more.
